Time needed
30 min–1 hours
Along the base of the wall inside Jianguomen, the southeast gate, a dawn market sets up daily: vegetable carts, fruit by the pile, breakfast griddles — all with 600-year-old ramparts rising directly behind. Less famous than Xiaonanmen, more photogenic than most, and the natural start to a southeast-corner morning.
Market under the ramparts
The composition is the point: market umbrellas and steaming breakfast stalls pressed against the grey brick of the city wall. Grandmothers negotiate pomegranates; knife-sharpeners and cake-sellers work the lane; the wall above is empty and quiet. It's a two-in-one — a real locals' market and the best morning light on the ramparts this side of the city.
How to do it
Come 6:30–8:30, eat at a busy stall (jianbing griddles are ideal — you watch it made), and finish by 9:30 when the market folds. Then keep walking: the wall's southeast corner to Shuncheng Lane is one of the quietest beautiful walks in the city, and the Forest of Steles sits a few blocks west.
Pick your market
Three morning markets, three characters: Xiaonanmen — the big breakfast classic; Dongcangmen — the shopping-lane scrum by the Beilin; Jianguomen — the photogenic wall-side strip. All free, all finished by ten; a determined early riser can do two in one morning with breakfast at each.
