Opened in 2022, this is the Tang dynasty as immersive theater: a full street scene rebuilt inside a shopping mall, staffed by actors who never break character. Chang'an Twelve Hours (长安十二时辰, Cháng'ān Shí'èr Shíchén) is not a historic site and doesn't pretend to be — it's a brilliantly executed themed world of lantern-lit lanes, Tang food stalls and hourly performances, and it has pulled in millions of visitors since 2022. Go in hanfu, stay for the evening finale, and don't expect a museum.

01

What you're looking at

In 2019 a tense historical drama called The Longest Day in Chang'an (长安十二时辰) — about foiling an attack on the Tang capital during the Lantern Festival — became a national hit. Three years later, Xi'an converted the Manti Plaza mall, next to Grand Tang Ever-Bright City, into the drama's world made walkable: several indoor floors of Tang-style streets, taverns and market stalls, built out in full detail and lit permanently like golden hour.

The twist that made it explode on Chinese social media — billions of views, millions of visits since opening — is the staffing. The whole place is populated by costumed NPCs (non-player characters, borrowed from gaming): the poet Li Bai (李白, Lǐ Bái) will trade verse with you at the tavern, officials hold court, vendors hawk in period patter, and scheduled performances — the Nishang Yuyi court dance (霓裳羽衣舞, Nícháng Yǔyī Wǔ) among them — cycle through the day, building to an evening finale show. Visitors rent hanfu (汉服, hànfú) at the door and become extras in the scene.

Know what it is, though: this is a themed mall, executed at a level most museums should envy. Nothing here is old. For the real Tang city it pastiches, read our Tang Chang'an history — then come enjoy the tribute act.

Visiting strategy

Book ahead. This is one of the most popular indoor attractions in China with domestic tourists. Weekends and holidays sell out — reserve 3–5 days out on the official WeChat account or Trip.com, and expect timed-entry slots at peak times. Our booking attractions guide covers the drill.

Rent the hanfu. Half the point is dressing up — rental shops inside and just outside do the full package (robe, styling, makeup) from around ¥100–150 a day. Arrive at opening on a weekday to skip the fitting queue; pick deep Tang colors (wine red, dark green) which photograph best under the warm interior light. If you enjoy it, take the look outdoors afterwards — our hanfu photoshoot guide maps the outdoor spots nearby.

Time it for the shows, not the shopping. Enter mid-afternoon: browse the floors and food stalls while it's calmer, catch the late-afternoon performances, eat, then stay for the evening finale (typically around 20:00 — confirm the day's schedule at entry). That's 3–4 hours total, and the lighting only gets better as the "evening" deepens.

Talk to the NPCs. They're briefed to engage — ask directions, accept the small quests, trade a poem with Li Bai. English is limited, but the staff are practiced at playing scenes across the language barrier, and a few Mandarin phrases go a long way.

Pair it: the block sits at the south end of Grand Tang Ever-Bright City, so the natural evening is Twelve Hours inside first, then out into the street's free open-air performances — arguably the best single night out in Xi'an, and the backbone of our Xi'an at night guide.

Getting there

The block occupies Manti Plaza (曼蒂广场, Màndì Guǎngchǎng) on Yannan 1st Road in the Qujiang district, immediately east of Grand Tang Ever-Bright City and a short walk south of the Big Wild Goose Pagoda.

  • Metro: Line 4 to Datang Furongyuan (大唐芙蓉园) station, exit A — about a 5-minute walk. Line 3 to Dayanta (大雁塔), exit C, works too at roughly a 15-minute walk through the pagoda area. Metro basics in our getting around guide.
  • On foot: from the Big Wild Goose Pagoda's south square, walk down Grand Tang Ever-Bright City — the entrance is just off its southern end.
  • Taxi/DiDi: ask for 曼蒂广场. Evening traffic around Qujiang is genuinely bad on weekends; arriving and leaving by metro after 17:00 saves real time.

Practical notes

  • Tickets: ¥68 adult (mid-2026 — earlier guides list ¥58, so confirm when booking), ¥38 for youth and students. Book via the official WeChat account or Trip.com; passports accepted, and international cards work at the on-site counters.
  • Food: the basement-level food court does Tang-styled Xi'an staples — mutton soup, sesame cakes, sweets — at around ¥40 a head. It's decent; the street stalls of Grand Tang Ever-Bright City outside are cheaper if you're grazing.
  • Signal and battery: the interior is a concrete box full of phones — connectivity degrades at peak times. Download what you need beforehand and carry a power bank; you'll shoot a lot of video.
  • Kids: excellent for children — indoor, weatherproof, sensory, and the NPC interactions land even without language. Strollers work; expect slow going in crowds.
  • Crowd reality: on Saturday nights this is one of the most densely packed indoor spaces in Chinese tourism. If crowds stress you, weekday 10:00–14:00 is the calm window.

Questions, answered

What is the Chang'an Twelve Hours theme block?

An immersive Tang-dynasty-themed indoor attraction in Xi'an, opened in 2022 inside the Manti Plaza mall. It recreates the street life of the Tang capital — costumed actors playing historical figures, Tang-style food stalls and hourly performances — inspired by the hit drama The Longest Day in Chang'an. It's a themed experience, not a historic site.

How much does Chang'an Twelve Hours cost?

Adult tickets were ¥68 as of mid-2026 (earlier guides list ¥58 — confirm when booking), ¥38 for youth and students, free for children under 1.2 m. Hanfu rental with styling runs about ¥100–150 extra if you dress up.

Do I need to book Chang'an Twelve Hours in advance?

Strongly recommended. It sells out on weekends and Chinese holidays — book 3–5 days ahead via the official WeChat account/mini program or Trip.com/Meituan. Passports are accepted and international cards work on site.

How long do you need at Chang'an Twelve Hours?

3–4 hours: an hour to explore the floors and stalls, time for the scheduled performances and a meal, and the evening finale show around 20:00. It pairs naturally with Grand Tang Ever-Bright City right outside.

Is Chang'an Twelve Hours worth it?

Yes if you take it on its own terms — it's a themed mall done brilliantly, with committed actors and gorgeous sets, not a historical attraction. Dress up, catch the shows and it's a memorable night; go expecting a museum and you'll be disappointed.

How do I get to Chang'an Twelve Hours?

Metro Line 4 to Datang Furongyuan station (exit A), a 5-minute walk; or Line 3 to Dayanta (exit C), about 15 minutes on foot. It's just east of Grand Tang Ever-Bright City, south of the Big Wild Goose Pagoda.
