Concerts and shows in Xi'an: venues, and how a foreigner actually buys tickets

Xi'an tours big — stadium concerts at the Olympic Sports Center, international acts at the Shaanxi Grand Theatre, livehouses in between. The hard part is the ticket system: Damai's passport real-name flow, step by step, plus the venue map.

Xi'an's venue map

Four tiers, one city. Xi'an Olympic Sports Center (奥体中心, Chanba district) is the stadium layer — the 2026 touring season has already brought major Mandopop names through. The Shaanxi Grand Theatre (陕西大剧院, Qujiang) is the touring-show layer: international music, drama and dance in genuinely excellent acoustics. Qujiang International Convention & Exhibition Center catches the arena-sized middle. And the livehouse circuitDahua 1935 and neighbors — hosts the indie tier; that world is covered in our nightlife and craft beer guide, where shows cost ¥100–250.

The system: real-name tickets (实名制)

China's anti-scalping law makes every ticket an identity. The rule set that matters to you: one ticket = one ID, non-transferable; entry = the QR code in the app plus the original physical passport. For foreigners this is workable — Damai supports passport verification — but you must do it in advance, not at the door.

Buying on Damai, step by step

1. Install Damai (大麦) — it's the Alibaba-owned giant that carries most stadium and theatre shows (competing platforms: Maoyan, Showstart; check which one your event lists). 2. Register with your Chinese phone number and link Alipay as the payment rail (our payments guide sets this up). 3. Do real-name verification once: in "My" → real-name, choose passport (护照), enter your name exactly as printed (spacing matters), upload the info page. 4. Add yourself under "Attendees/观演人" with the passport number. 5. Buy: select the show, pick seats, select yourself as attendee, pay. Popular shows open in waves and sell out in minutes — be logged in beforehand. 6. On the day: the QR code lives in the app's order page; bring the original passport. Photos of it don't work.

Finding what's on

Damai's Xi'an section is the master list; Bendibao (本地宝) maintains a running concert calendar with on-sale dates; venue WeChat accounts announce first. If a show is "sold out", check the official resale window inside Damai rather than scalpers — off-platform tickets can be invalidated, and the real-name system makes them unusable anyway. For the smaller stuff, our events overview keeps the seasonal rhythm.

Questions, answered

Can foreigners buy concert tickets in China?

Yes — via Damai and similar platforms with passport real-name verification. Register with your Chinese phone number, verify your passport under “My → real-name”, add yourself as an attendee, pay through Alipay. Bring the original passport to the show; tickets are ID-bound and non-transferable.

Which app should I use?

Damai (大麦) for stadium concerts and theatre; Showstart (秀动) for livehouse shows; Maoyan for some tours. The event's poster always names its platform — install that one.

Why can't I transfer my extra ticket to a friend?

Real-name rules bind each ticket to one ID at purchase. If a companion cancels, use the official refund or resale window in the app — bought tickets can't simply be given to someone else.
