Along the base of the wall inside Jianguomen, the southeast gate, the Old Vegetable Market (老菜场) starts its day at dawn: vegetable carts, fruit by the pile, breakfast griddles — with 600-year-old ramparts rising directly behind. Unlike other Xi'an morning markets it never really ends: the converted market halls host cafes, bars, shops, a cinema and events that run all day into the evening.

01

Market under the ramparts

The composition is the point: market umbrellas and steaming breakfast stalls pressed against the grey brick of the city wall. Grandmothers negotiate pomegranates; knife-sharpeners and cake-sellers work the lane; the wall above is empty and quiet. It's a two-in-one — a real locals' market at dawn, and from late morning a creative district of cafes, galleries and small bars inside the old market halls.

02

How to do it

For the raw market energy come 6:30–8:30 and eat at a busy stall (jianbing griddles are ideal — you watch it made). But there's no curfew here: produce stalls thin out by mid-morning while the indoor market, cafes and events carry on all day, so an afternoon or evening visit also works. Then keep walking: the wall's southeast corner to Shuncheng Lane is one of the quietest beautiful walks in the city, and the Forest of Steles sits a few blocks west.

Pick your market

Three wall-side markets, three characters: Xiaonanmen — the big breakfast classic; Dongcangmen — the shopping-lane scrum by the Beilin; Jianguomen — the Old Vegetable Market, where the morning market melts into an all-day creative district. All free; Jianguomen is the only one that rewards a visit after ten.

What is the Jianguomen Old Vegetable Market?

The all-day market and creative district along the base of the city wall inside the southeast gate — vegetable stalls from about 6:00, plus an indoor market, cafes, bars and events running into the evening. Free.

What time does it start?

Produce stalls set up around 6:00 and the morning-market rhythm peaks 6:30–8:30 — but unlike Xi'an's other morning markets the district stays lively all day, with cafes and bars open into the evening.

Which Xi'an morning market should I visit?

Xiaonanmen for the classic big breakfast scene, Dongcangmen for a genuine shopping lane, Jianguomen for the wall-backdrop photos plus an all-day creative district. Only Jianguomen is worth visiting once the morning is over.
