The wall's slow lane
An evening at ground level, with the locals
Everyone climbs the wall; almost nobody walks its base. This evening route stays at street level — bar lane, locals' promenade under the bricks, the light-up on the south gate, and the snack street tucked inside the west gate hole.
Stop 1 · Street

Start mid-afternoon in Defu Lane, the Qing-courtyard bar street. Coffee or craft beer in a 100-year-old doorway; the lane wakes up around five.
Stop 2 · Street

Cut south to the wall base and follow Shuncheng Lane west — chess tables, barber chairs, laundry, 600-year-old brick towering over the bicycles. This is the locals' promenade.
Stop 3 · Attraction

Emerge at South Gate square for the dusk light-up on the wall. Watch the flags and the square dancers; skip the climb — tonight is about the base.
Stop 4 · Dish

Hunger stop: the snack lane inside the west gate hole. A guokui — stone-oven flatbread — is a meal for the price of a coffee.
Stop 5 · Dish

Finish where the smoke is: lamb skewers off the grill at the lane mouth. Cumin, chili, one more bingfeng if you saved room.
